Rossi watched the men on the beach from the trees beyond the sand. There were now four in their number, including the big guy that he had seen in the container café. They were clearly a unit, familiar with one another. He couldn’t hear everything that was being said, but their easy banter was obvious. Later in the night, one of them had walked toward him and stopped by the little hut to pull some beers from an ice chest. He had heard one of the men on the beach ask how to get somewhere from the South Pacific, and the man by the ice chest, the big guy, had called back, Santiago, Chile.

Once again, Rossi felt as if he was ahead of the game. He needed to retreat for the evening and see if he could conjure up some cell phone reception. He had to speak with Tehran. If they were going to Santiago, Rossi wanted to ensure there was a welcoming party ready for them.

Two of the men from the group wandered up into the trees close to where Rossi was hidden, and for a moment he thought about sneaking away before he was found. But without warning, the two men seemed to turn their gazes in his direction, and he froze, holding his breath.

Eventually, the two men had relaxed and moved on to prepare themselves for sleep. The group was resting two on, two off. Rossi had no such luck. He was alone, and if he was going to take four men on, in Santiago or anywhere else, he was going to need some extra hands.

And sleep of his own. As the men stepped into the hut to gather some kind of bedding, Rossi slowly snuck away into the night, returning to his car that he had left in the scrub by the side of the road. He waited until he was in the vehicle to bring his phone to life, but it was in vain. He didn’t see a single bar of reception. His call to Tehran would have to wait until he could get to the village in the morning.
